The Saboba district in Northern region has been hit by an acute water scarcity, deepening fears of epidemic outbreak.

The development, according to Starr News checks, is as a result of some technical fault which has affected major waterworks.

Many equipment have been found to be weary and in some cases broken down.

Residents say water supply has been cut off for months without an explanation, sparking public anger and protest.

The situation has compelled residents to resort to water sourced from the polluted dams and Ponds for domestic and commercial purposes; school children spend entire nights searching for water.

Major facilities in the district including healthcare centers and homes of security personnel are also said to be grappling with the crisis.

There are reports of mini businesses including chop bars closing down.

A student, Kaabemon James, said they walked long distance to the Moadani dam to fetch water which he said was “not good for their health”. He appealed to government for a quick fix or be penalized on the day of polls.

“we are coming on to call upon the government of this country, we are giving him 35 days if nothing is done about the matter we are going to vote against him and the MP; so we are drawing his attention to provide it for us”.

Another resident said “we are facing a difficult time now, we depend on the dam here for survival and the cattle drink here and still urinate inside which is very bad, see people here bathing and all sought of things inside the water and this is the only source of water. Our student drink from here which is very bad that is why you see people running to hospitals day in and day out”.

The water company in the region is yet to comment on the matter.

Saboba is among the districts in the region where deaths from waterborne diseases are common.
